Saddlestitch: A binding method that nests one 16-page signature on top of another and then fastens them with wires (stitches) through the middle fold of the sheets.

Scanner: An input device that digitizes printed images, creating digital images that may be manipulated electronically.

Signature: Printed sheet containing 16 total yearbook pages, eight pages on each side of the sheet. Signatures are folded, trimmed and bound to create a finished yearbook.

Signature Design Covers: Professionally designed, full-color yearbook covers available with all Lifetouch Publishing yearbook programs in either a hard or soft cover.

Signature Order (Sig Order): The process of placing pages in proper order by signature, determined by the number of pages in the book and the binding method.

Smythe Sewing: A book-binding process in which 16-page signatures are folded and trimmed to create a 16-page section.  These 16-page sections are stitched together and inserted into the cover.  Smythe sewn pagination charts show specific placement of each page number on signatures and flats.

Square-Back Binding: A hard cover binding process that utilizes state-of-the-art production technology to create a flat, durable spine.

The State of Create Kit: Instructions and materials that guide the customer through the yearbook creation and submission process. Contents are specific to the school’s selected yearbook program.

Supplement: An additional insert used to capture year-end activities missed with the early submission. Includes an adhesive strip so that the school can insert it into books before or after delivery. Supplements are not available with the Lifetimes Program.

TIFF: Tagged Image File Format. A type of image file format, TIFF files can be color or grayscale. The quality of the image is determined by its resolution or dpi. When exporting images for use in Adobe® PageMaker® or QuarkXPress®, choose this format first. If it does not work well, the EPS format will be fine. If using graphics, such as line art, an EPS file format is recommended.

Trim Size: The final size of a yearbook page. Lifetouch Yearbook pages have a trim size of 8”X10 1/2”.

Volumes: Available as a complete online yearbook program or it can be used in conjunction with Adobe® PageMaker® or Adobe® InDesign®. It includes all the options and functions you need to create a sophisticated and artistic yearbook that captures your year and your school.

WebEase: Lifetouch Publishing’s yearbook program that allows the customer to create and submit their yearbook online.

WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get. Describes the “scanner-ready process” in yearbook printing in which yearbook pages are printed exactly as submitted to Lifetouch. The Memory Maker program may be described as WYSIWYG.

Zoom A Year-in-Review: A 16-page, full-color year-in-review insert that can be stitched or taped in the yearbook. It features the year’s biggest news stories, sports achievements and hottest entertainment buzz.
