  Creating Pages—Designing with Color

Fabulous, fun color! Highlight the excitement of your color pages by using color backgrounds and graphics to accent your design. Worried about choosing the appropriate colors? Here are a few guidelines to get you on the right track.

Start with the photos on the page.
Before you choose your colors, think about the contents of the page. Is there a predominant color showing up in the page’s images? Perhaps the dominant photo includes a group of students wearing blue jeans. You could choose colors that correspond with or complement this color.

Emphasize rather than detract.
The color should draw attention to the elements on the page, not away from them. Use high-intensity colors to bring attention to important elements. Remember not to use dark colors behind text or it may be hard to read.

Keep it simple.
Avoid distracting the viewer with too many colors. No more than three colors should be used. A background doesn't need to fill the page. Sometimes a white background with accent colors is the best approach. Try to keep some color consistency in the sections of your yearbook.

Use the color wheel.
The color wheel is a very useful tool that will help you select appropriate color combinations. You can purchase color wheels at most art supply stores. Check out the Color Wheel tutorial below to see how the color wheel can be used to create a variety of color schemes.
