  Planning Your Yearbook—Yearbook Staff Roles 

Yearbook Staff ResponsibilitiesYearbook staffs can consist of three groups—students who participate as part of an elected curriculum, students who volunteer as an extracurricular activity or parents who volunteer. Job descriptions clarify who does what and establish the chain of command:

Yearbook Adviser

  • Manages overall creation of the book
  • Instructs staff on all aspects of production
  • Administers the sales campaigns
  • Plans and controls the budget
  • Collects payment, keeps records of sales, distributes receipts
  • Assigns photo shoots at school events
  • Manages deadlines
  • Conducts final edit

Editors

  • Develop design and content
  • Draft stories in the established style of the yearbook
  • Contribute to copy writing and layout

Photographers

  • Shoot assigned events to comply with deadlines
  • Carry camera whenever possible to capture spontaneous moments
  • Record names of those photographed for caption information
  • Maintain photographic standards

Staff Members/Students

  • Complete assignments on time to comply with established deadlines
  • Gather facts and quotes at assigned activities and events
  • Select appropriate layouts or alter pre-designed layouts
  • Find creative ways to capture uninvolved students
  • Contribute to the housekeeping chores necessary to stay organized and productive
